Previous demos from Israeli start-up Storedot have relied on batteries many times bigger than current models – but the new prototype fits inside an ordinary smartphone.
The technology could revolutionise the way we use portable electronics: even the charger is almost the same size ordinary phone chargers.
Maker StoreDot claims the batteries rely on hi-tech artificial materials which work like a ‘super-dense sponge’ which soaks up power.
‘These are new materials, they have never been developed before,’ said Doron Myersdorf, the founder and chief executive of StoreDot.
‘We have reactions in the battery that are non-traditional reactions that allow us to charge very fast, moving ions from an anode to a cathode at a speed that was not possible before we had these materials.’
