The Illinois Department of Public Health is sponsoring a number of events across the state this month so people can get tested for the virus that causes AIDS. Sunday is National HIV Testing Day.

Officials say Illinois has had more than 41,000 reported cases of AIDS since 1981 and about 20,000 of those people have died.

The public health department encourages people to be tested for HIV because many people infected with the virus don’t know they have it. People knowing their HIV status can help stem the spread of the virus.
